Weekend Dressmaking Intensive - November 2nd & 3rd

HOURS OF INSTRUCTION:

  • 15 hours over 2 days, 10am-6pm Saturday & 10am-5pm Sunday

CLASS SIZE:

  • 3-5 students

  • Use of studio equipment and tools.* (If you prefer to work on your own sewing machine, you are welcome to bring it.)

As part of our Learn to Sew classes, sewing instruction is taught with an emphasis on key industry skills and techniques to create professional-looking garments at home. Classes are fun and productive. We encourage anyone who is interested in sewing to join us for this weekend intensive, whether you are strictly a hobbyist or interested in learning construction skills to bring your original fashion designs to life.

Our Dressmaking Intensive is like taking a 2-day sewing vacation! Spend the weekend working in an inspiring and friendly environment to fit, cut, and sew your own well-finished dress. After this class you'll start your week with a brand new, handmade garment to wear!**

Classwork includes…

  • Fabric overview with swatch examples.
  • Trim examples and overview of creative ways to personalize your handmade garments.
  • How to read, use, and modify commercially made sewing patterns.
  • Muslin fittings and pattern alterations including how to fit yourself and how to fit others.
  • How to prep, cut, and mark fabric.
  • Overview of garment construction which can be applied to making any item of clothing.
  • Sewing methods to increase speed and accuracy.
  • Zipper installation methods.
  • Pocket installation methods.
  • Professional finishing methods.

Students will leave the Weekend Dressmaking Intensive with...

  • Knowledge, skills, tips, and tricks taught by experts in their field.
  • A finished project to show friends how talented you are!**
  • Drinks and snacks from our favorite Brooklyn-based shops. Day-long Intensives also include locally catered lunches and a fun cocktail hour to end each day.

ABOUT THE INSTRUCTOR

Jennifer Wiese is a seamstress, patternmaker, fabric designer, and screen printer based in Brooklyn, NY. Sewing since she was 15, Jennifer studied industry techniques at the Fashion Institute of Technology in New York City. More than anything, she enjoys sharing her love of textile crafts with others and is a thoughtful, effective, and fun educator. *All of our classes include the use of studio equipment, but do not include student supplies. Supply lists are emailed to enrolled students two weeks before each class date. **While we cannot guarantee that each student will complete her dress, the majority of students do. ***Please be sure to read our class and studio policies.
